Light Engine? Lamp Ballast? DMD Board?…”Oh My!”

If you’ve ever had a problem with your DLP television, those are all things that may end up being the problem.  Televisions are designed to be way easier to repair than the old fashioned rear projections CRT TVs.  But there are a lot of options to consider and confusion can be costly. Knowing where to start isn’t always easy.

Take these steps and consider your best options:

  • Don’t panic – I know you want to.  Your TV isn’t working and you’re not quite sure what to do
  • Contact a professionial – Many TV repair guys will give you an estimate to do the work or give you a better idea of what the problem is.  Getting a professional opinion is always a good idea.
  • Check the forums – Chances are your problem is not unique. Forums can help you save a lot of time and frustration.
  • Grab a service manual – If you choose to repair the television yourself this is where you want to start. It will tell you where everything is located inside the television as well as the part numbers for replacement parts.
  • Proceed with caution - If you’re going to just replace the lamp, that’s a no-brainer.  If you’re going to be touching ballasts, and boards.  Make sure you know what you’re doing.

At some point, it’ll just be easier to replace than to repair, but it’s not always a clear cut decision to make.  Decide wisely.
