Sony TV Optical Block Issues Addressed

Sony usually takes a different approach to things.  The world wanted HD-DVD, they sold Blu-Ray.  The world wanted cassette players, and they sold Sony Walkman.  The world wanted MP3, Sony sold ATRAC3.

With Sony’s record of being different, it should come to no surprise that the same is true with their optical block assemblies.  See optical blocks in WEGAland are the same as light engines for the rest of the manufacturers that make DLP televisions.  There are lots of people reporting problems with the picture of their WEGA televisions and while the lamp is the cheapest thing to replace, it isn’t necessarily the solution to the problem.

Sony, realizing the error of their ways like other manufactures (ex. Mitsubishi, see here), they’ve decided to extend the warranties on these kinds of parts hoping that people don’t decide to stop buying their product anymore.  Depending on when you purchased your set, you may have until 2008/2009 to get everything straightened out.  If you’re looking for more information, you should check here.

So, if you’re experiencing blue dots on your WEGA television, you shouldn’t be surprised when you here it’s the optical block that needs to be replaced.

On June 23, 2007, Sony issued 2004 Grand WEGA Additional Service Coverage on the optical blocks of the following models: KDF-42WE655, KDF-50WE655, KDF-55WF655, KDF-60WF655, KDF-55XS955, KDF-60XS955, KF-42WE620, and KF-50WE620. This coverage is based on what Sony describes as a “blue dot” or “blue star” pattern (also called “blue haze,” “blue blob,” and other names by some owners). Sony has posted sample pictures of the blue spot problem at the above link. One of them is from my TV (see pictures below). The location and intensity of the blue anomalies can change, tending to get progressively worse. Some users have reported that, over time, increasing numbers of bright blue or white spots appear within the anomalies, which presumably represent pixels stuck in an “activated” state. Colors other than blue have also been reported. The additional service coverage is good through December 31, 2008 regardless of the original purchase date, and owners who have already had their TVs repaired at their own expense will be reimbursed. The page linked above contains links to instructions and a claim form.

Although owners of the 2003 Grand WEGA models were reporting these same blue anomalies, Sony originally chose not to cover these older models. However, on December 11, 2007, they issued a 2003 Grand WEGA Additional Service Coverage on the optical blocks of the following models: KF-42WE610, KF-50WE610, KF-60WE610, KDF-60XBR950, and KDF-70XBR950. It is important to note that this additional service coverage is good only through June 30, 2008. This is six months before the expiration on the 2004 models, even though the coverage was issued about six months later. This provides a relatively short six-month window for claims. The coverage applies regardless of the original purchase date, and owners who have already had their TVs repaired at their own expense will be reimbursed.

You may be wondering why a service bulletin was never distributed publicly for this.  Thankfully better late than never.

Its unfortunate that sony couldn't be bothered to advertise this extra support or that there was a problem. We bought the KF-50we620 in January 2005. It started to get spots in late 2009. We thought it was just a smear on the screen that wasn't cleaning off. When we finally found out otherwise, it was a week after the end of our extended warranty. Sony should be held responsible for all models of the television, especially when they are aware it can fail. When you pay $5000 for a television, you expect it to last.

I have a KDF-60XS955 the optic block was replaced under extended warranty after 3 years of owning this tv, one year later the same problem. Sony will not stand behind their product all they could say is "its out of warranty we can't help you". I went as far as filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, Sony came back with you can buy another tv at a discount price which was like $1200. No thanks. I hope Sony goes down cause of this.

I have a KDF-55WF655 that is covered by extended future shop warranty until September 2010. While I have not had any issues in the four + years that I have owned the TV I am concerned that something is going to happen to it after the warranty expires. My TV is currently well over 10,000 hours of usage. Does the opitcal block issue occur in all KDF-55WF655 TV's and it is just a matter of time? Is there any way of preventing it from happening?

Hope you continue having good luck w/your tv. We have the same one & have @ 11k hours on it; it's about 5 years old. We now have the "blue blob"... after researching & discovering Sony issued an extended warranty for this exact issue, but failed to contact the buyers of these $3K models about it... and we're SOL now... we'll keep it as long as we can still watch it & then we will NEVER buy another Sony product again. That is NOT how you build loyal customers! The rep I talked to wouldn't even acknowledge that there even was a problem...
    Good luck to you!

Hi Rob, there doesn't look like it's limited to any specific models, and that there isn't a way of preventing it. I can't say with 100% certainty but if you haven't experienced the issue by now, I'd say it's a good chance that you won't experience it for the rest of the time you own your television. In the meantime....enjoy it. A lot of other people haven't had the same fortune you've had.

tell everyone about this and no more sony products for me. My walkman got tossed in the middle of a lake. My sony camcorder fell off the picnic table onto the concrete patio, then into the garbage can. There are plenty of better choices out there. How else is Joe the consumer going to deal with getting screwed by suck a large corporation. Thats how I answer to the blue blob on my wega.

so i was happy and called sony back with the price all broke down like they requested and told them were i don't have a tv right now which is killing me lol and they put me on hold which is sometime long periods and horrible music putting me to sleep were i drive for a living not good :) ok the tech finally came back said we can't help you with the repair!! and i said wtf did i just jump through hoops for nothing they said they offer me 52inch for like 1,300 dollars + tax which i insisted that i had to have atleast equal or bigger tv for me to be satisfied so the lady promised she call me "Fran" the next moring by 10am est so i waited patientley well that never happened i had to call back the same day around 5pm 7 hours late "FBS" i called back and talked to a guy for the first time the rest were women so he told me that all he could offer me the 52" and i told him i was waiting all day for a call from a lady named Fran and he told me he couldn't let me talk to her or anything which then i got pissed and told him this is BS and you know it im not settling for less and especially for a deal that isn't a deal now cause walmart sears bestbuy all were like 100 dollars from the big deal sony was offering i said i just paid 50 dollars for them to look at my tv already and i had to get someones truck to get it there $$ i said i really want my Sony KDF-60WF655 fixed which was like $900 dollars total and i want some help im aware of all the problems my model along with other are having and the class action lawsuits against them and of course with this problem the OB it was a defective part from the beginning and they knew about it and now they are in a shit storm over it of course they will act all cool about it they don't even like it even happened so carlos told me then i had to speak to a higher department so i did and then they right off the bat told me well i can offer you now to cover half of ya repair bill which i said well i take that better then paying 1,300+tax for a smaller 52" that wasn't a deal after all i recommend everyone to do the research on it of course i told them if i had to get a new tv i wanted the New Sony Bravia W Series 65" of course i didn't expect it for free duh lol but i wanted credit towards it which they didn't want to do so for now i lucked out again the guy from sony called the repair shop and now Sony decided to cover the Optical Block and me to just pay for Labor $225-$50 i already paid for them to look at it which goes toward ya bill if you decide to get it fixed so now im waiting on the New OB from Sony to get to repair shop and hopefully get it withing the new few days i can't wait i love this Sony especially paying right at $4 thousand dollars for little over 3 years of service is a bunch of crap it was a investment so i told them that so for now ill be waiting on when i get it back and ill post a update on when i get it back asap ok thanks everyone for listening if anyone needs any help feel free to email me ill help with whatever i can :)

I have the KDF-60WF655 with a failed optical block. I was just able to find this website and had just about given up fixing the tv. Is there any way I can get assistant with replacing the optical block? I love the tv and would be disappointed if I wasn't able to fix it.
