I’m usually not a conspiracy theorist, but hear me out here. Companies all over the world have spent billions of dollars backing DLP HDTVs. Slowly, they’ve been dropping like flies to the point where most stores will only carry a few models in their store if they carry any at all. Companies barely make them anymore, and the ones that do seem to be signaling that they want to be out of the business.
Why do I say that? Because there is story after story of companies not standing behind their product. Usually companies care. Not because of altruism of any sort, but they realize that if they keep letting people down that they won’t have many more customers left to let down with their products in the future (see Dell circa 2002).
Take the story of Kevin. He details on his blog how unhelpful Toshiba was with helping him with a television that was a problem from the time he opened the box. It was such a bad experience that he’s vowed to never buy any of their products again. Now, that may be difficult since Toshiba makes and cooperates with so many other manufacturers to make things, but to have people get to that point of frustration is ridiculous.
My sub-$400 Vizio 32″ LCD HDTV is feeling better and better by the day.
