GE To Enter HDTV Arena With A Twist

GE is looking to get into making HDTVs.  While it sounds crazy that a multi-billion dollar company would participate in a market segment that is low margin and requires a high investment they have an idea to differentiate themselves.

According to Reuters:

The venture aims to make televisions that would access the Internet directly, without the use of an external computer. It plans to begin production next year, with a first-year target of 2 million TVs, about 1 percent of the global market, according to a spokeswoman for the venture.

Fairfield, Connecticut-based GE, with businesses ranging from commercial lending to building jet engines, plans to spin off its consumer-related businesses, which also include appliances, to shareholders.

The question will be what kind of information will people be able to access directly from their television.  If it’s gimmicky like weather than it may not be something worth consider.  If there’s some interplay between the web and the television so specific content can be shared with the television, GE just may be onto something.
