Philips is grasping at straws. They want to sell more HDTVs, but they aren’t quite sure how. We can tell that they are getting desperate since they just announced televisons with replacement faceplates. This is something that hasn’t been pushed in a big way since Nokia. The Nokia 5160 and other 5100 and 6100 series phones were the ultimate phone; 10 years ago.
The idea is to knowingly make little money from the product, but make money from the accessories. Traditionally with televisions, the only accessory that you were sure to sell a customer was a cable, or maybe an extended warranty. The issue is that the retailer usually handles this. This make mark the beginning of a long line of product tie ins to help bolster sales and appeal to a younger generation.
