The cutting edge images are great. The new 120Hz sets are fantastic. In fact, all you had to do is watch a DLP television properly configured with some HD content to be amazed at the picture quality. However, with most DLP televisions almost ten inches deep, you aren’t able to hang them on a wall like you are with LCD and Plasma televisions.
With CEDIA having already taken place, what is it about DLP that will have it going strong for the next few years until it dies?
Answer:
The pricing of these television is what has kept them around, now more than ever.
DLP televisions have gone through several generations making the cost of production low. Only with DLP are you able to get a 50″ HDTV for under $1,000. Prices for a 37″ CRT were at that level only a few years ago. You certainly aren’t able to get that kind of deal if you want to get a flat panel television. When faced with having to spend $3,000+ to hang something big on the wall or paying $999 to settling with a TV stand, many would opt to choose DLP.
The piece of the puzzle that negative the cost benefit is the expense of the lamps. The good part is that now you can get a television from Mitsubishi where the lamps are only $99. This means that it would take 20 lamp (120,000 hours worth) to equal the price difference.
