With the conversion of television systems from analog to digital, many people are taking the hint and getting on the HDTV bandwagon by purchasing a set.
In a report from Leichtman Research, they report that HDTV penetration has doubled over the last two years. When consider some reasons for this taking place there are a lot of things which come to mind.
- Retail stores have all but stopped carrying anything but HDTVs. If you’re looking to replace an old television and don’t want to pay hundreds in shipping by buying online you’re going to buy an HDTV. HDTV CRTs have been available for years in retail channels all across the years. It would be interesting to see the penetration of LCD/Plasma/DLP HDTVs in comparison to Leichtman’s numbers.
- HDTV prices have come down considerably. When HDTVs first became available, they cost several thousand dollars. Now you’re able to get a 32″ LCD HDTV for under $500 from a brand name manufacturer.
- HDTVs are thinner and use less energy. These are secondary qualities, but can’t be ignored. Most of the HDTVs on the market now use less energy than the CRTs of previous days. Also, many HDTVs are only a few inches thick making them able to fit on walls, and in other places CRT television were unable to fit.
- Analog is almost dead. With HDTVs you get better picture quality and with Blu-ray and DVD people are looking for higher quality. This is where HDTVs shine.
