This is pure speculation, but if you’ve purchased a television from a retail store and if you’ve purchased a name brand television from one of these stores you may want to keep reading.
In America, people sue – especially when they feel that they didn’t get what they paid for. In electronics there are lots of conspiracies which are created due to the lack of margin and profit in the finished television, or computer. Previously companies have been sued because the hard drive in their computer was measured as gigabytes (GB) by using 1,000 MB instead of 1,024 MB.
When it comes to televisions, the issues comes to screen size. Buying a 32″ television means buying a television with a diagonal measurement which is 32 inches in length. Some manufacturers have been trying to make more money by making the televison 31.5 inches instead of 32 inches. The half inch may not sound like a lot of money but it allows manufacturers to make additional televisions from the same piece of glass at their factory. Once the television gets to the store, they have the opportunity to tell a customer the real size or to make it more “consumer-friendly.” The problem is that by making them easier for a customer to understand they may have deceived them with a conspiracy that may cost everyone dearly if the right lawyers get a whiff of this.
The real issue for a judge to weigh is if manufacturers and retailers can be proven to have colluded to get more money while not giving customers all the information they needed in order to make the best purchase decision. We don’t wish anything negative on anyone (especially because any lawsuits will just mean higher prices for everyone else for a few years), but it’ll be really interesting to see how this all turns out.
