It won’t be easy to get people to spend $6995 for a brand spanking new Laser TV. Also, there is a pretty sizable base of people who have already purchase DLP televisions who are growing tired of replacing lamps.
This opens the door for a solution which would allow users to upgrade their existing televisions to Laser TV.
How? It turns out it isn’t that difficult.
Consider that back in 2007, Novalux was showing off a prototype of their Laser TV. When asked how they were able to do it, someone at the company said:
“We took the off-the-shelf Mitsubishi projection TV and removed the lamp and color wheel, stuck our lasers inside the box, and then we had our TV,” explained Greg Niven, vice president of marketing at Novalux, also adding that the retrofitted projection TV was for demonstration purposes, and that upgrading existing sets would be cost prohibitive.
Now you have to take what Mr. Niven says with a grain of salt. Novalux was trying to sell televisions not conversion kits so of course he’s going to say that it would be expensive to do. For $1,000 it seems like many would just on the opportunity to get their picture to the same quality as a television that costs 7x more.
We’ll have to wait and see, but it seems like it will only be a short while before we hear an announcement from Mitsubishi or Samsung.
