Most of you were probably unable to get a hold of the Sharp being sold at Big Lots for the unheard of retail price of $699. Many people online were making mention of quality and production issues with the television which explains the low price tag.
You can actually get a name brand 42″ 1080p LCD HDTV for $649. Two things are different about this lower prices television. First it’s only availabe online, so you won’t have to pay for tax but you will have to contend with paying shipping to get it to your front door. Second, it isn’t a low quality version of a Sharp. It’s a Vizio HDTV which means it probably uses a Sharp panel just without the name.
The model number of the Vizio HDTV is GV42LF. If CNet is any indicator, the editors weren’t too fond of it, but people who own it (or claim to own it) absolutely love it. Two versions of the television are available.
You can buy version 1 here and version 2 here. No matter how you buy it, you’ll still be getting a great set. Here are some of the specs:
Black design 42-inch Diagonal color TFT Active Matrix LCD display 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio Full HD 1080p display compatibility Integrated ATSC/NTSC/QAM HDTV tuner Anti-Static and hard coated surface 1920 x 1080 native resolution 1500:1 Dynamic contrast ratio 500 cd/m2 brightness 8 ms response tine 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle 2x 10W + Tweeter audio Picture-in-Picture (PIP)
It probably wont’ be delivered to your door if you need a last minute Christmas gift, but it’s still a great value.
