In a recent report, research firm Quixel reports that in 2008 LCD HDTV shipments increased in the double digits while Plasma shipments rose a scant 2 percent. The biggest problem is seen in revenue as the selling price has plummeted over the course of 2008. This means that manufacturers of Plasma TVs brought in much less revenue which makes it hard to continue to stay in the business of making the sets.
There’s a much different story with LCD HDTVs with big increases in the 40-42, and 50-52 inch segments. With television of this size falling below the $1,000 price point it stands to reason that there will be continued strength into 2009. To help address the issue of lower prices, manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung and Sharp have been adding new features to their televisions to help maintain their high prices.
