If you’re looking at a plasma television like the new Samsung PN42B450 and you look at the specs for the television you’ll see that the resolution is only 1024×768. Now the television is a 720p television but when you divide 1024×768 you don’t get 16×9, you actually get 4:3. How then does a 1024×768 screen produce a 720p, 16:9 image.
Pregamelobby.com has an interesting explanation:
The pixels are NOT SQUARE on these sets. They are rectangles, which is why you still get a 16×9 image.
My best friend has a 42″ Vizio which is like this. Honestly it isn’t something that is noticeable, so don’t expect it to make the picture look bad or anything like that. The 50″ Vizio is different which my other buddy has.
While searching around the web I couldn’t find a more scientific explanation so I’m going to run with this. If you pick up a 50 inch plasma you won’t have to worry.
