If you look on the box or the specifications of many Plasma HDTVs, you’ll see that they are typically rated for a 100,000 hour lifetime. If you watch TV an average of 8 hours a day you’d be able to watch your television for over 30 years.Currently most LCD HDTVs don’t provide the same kind of indicator so you can’t be completely sure but there haven’t been any widespread reports of LCD screens getting dim after a couple of years.
More importantly the 100,000 hour lifetime for the plasma screen doesn’t mean that it will stop working at that time, it only means that after that many hours the screen will achieve 50 brightness.
Even with that caveat, three decades seems completely sufficient to look forward to.
