In a move which will further consolidate the Consumer Electronics industry, Samsung will be purchasing Sony’s HDTV business for the equivalent of $3B US. With the additional funding Sony will be able to turn around a year which has already started out rough for the PS3 console manufacturer.
With Sony no longer in the HDTV, it will be able to focus on the other parts of it’s business: movie making, MP3 players, cell phones, and game consoles.
It’s hard to determine if this offer will pass regulatory scrutiny, with Samsung being #1 and #3 in the segment.
What is also unknown is what will happen to the development of Sony’s Blu-ray technology for HD video content.
The two companies are preparing to make a formal announcement tomorrow, according to a article on Bloomberg.com
