Why I’ll Never Buy Another Plasma HDTV Ever Again

A lot of the posts I write come from other places, but I wanted to share a more personal story. Specifically I want to share why I’ll never buy another plasma television. It isn’t because I don’t like them, I do. In fact, nothing was better than when my Samsung 50A450 was firing up watching ESPN HD or a movie. The problem arose when I received my first electric bill after owning the set.

It took a lot of digging around, I discovered that while the television was on it was using up 470W. It felt good knowing that it didn’t use up much while it was turned off but my biggest concern was how much power it was using while it was turned on. My electric bill went from about $85/month to $200. I wanted to unplug everything in the house especially with money having to stretch as far as possible. In going from the 32″ Vizio, we almost never watched to the Samsung I didn’t realize things were going to change that drastically.

It was at that point that I drew the line in the sand, I wouldn’t do it. I couldn’t do it. As much as I loved the picture I couldn’t justify the spend. In looking at most of the deals I write about plasma televisions are typically a few hundred dollars cheaper. If you don’t watch a lot of television it’s a great investment. Otherwise you may end up like me and have to find out the hard way.

My main television is a Sony LCD HDTV. The picture isn’t as good, but when I got my new bill after a month of using the Sony, it was only $130. It’s still a lot more than I thought it was going to be, but saving $70/month is a good start.
