LED HDTVs – The Great HDTV Lie Of 2009

Access more than 7.4 million parts at Parts Direct

When engineers and marketing people get together within a company, some crazy things can happen.  You just have to look back at the fiasco which has been DLP HDTVs and life of tv lamps.  Something similar happened at Samsung when their line of Luxia LED HDTVs were made available.  In fact, they aren’t televisions which use a LED screen – they are actually fitted with traditional LCD screens but use LED backlighting instead of CCFL (cold cathode flourescent lights).

HDTVProfessor.com looks at the pros and cons and the good outweighs the bad even after Samsung got away with their marketing lie.  The LED backlighting allows these televisions to be lighter, and thinner.  Also the overall picture quality and performance of these televisions perform better than their CCFL backlit counterparts in addition to using less power.

With prices coming down, more people who were turned off by a $4,000 “LED” HDTV may now consider it at $2,999.  More and more manufacturers will be using this alternative, so it looks like we should all get used to calling these televisions LED HDTVs and pretending that nothing is wrong with that.

This is something that really irked me. The sheer ignorance of the common consumer is mind-boggling. They are completely misrepresenting these televisions as being “LED”, making the technologically inept sheep think these are LED screens… *SIGH* It's a travesty!!!!
