Being the pessimist doesn’t always feel good. It’s a disadvantage of looking from the outside in and trying to spot trends which don’t always make it. The promise of LaserVue sounded great with it’s better color reproduction and better black levels. LaserVue has some fatal flaws.
-It’s too big. Fat is wack! – No one wants a television you can’t hang up on the wall at some point. LCD is numero uno, plasma has been trying to run second. DLP is dying slowly and LaserVue should go along with it. As people move away from 4,000+ sq. ft. homes there isn’t going to be space for deep rear projection HDTVs no matter how great the picture quality is.
-Horrible distribution – If Mitsubishi was really really serious about LaserVue, they would have partnered with Best Buys Magnolia store-in-a-store to get more people aware of how great it is. Even if you wanted to buy one of these $5,000+ televisions you can try to buy one on Amazon but chances are that you’ll want to see one of these up close and personal. Mitsubishi doesn’t agree or maybe they just can’t pump them out fast enough.
- Priced out of consideration – Most people don’t want to pay $2,000 for a television. Even Samsung, who has no problem selling HDTVs, aggressively dropped the price on their new LED LCD HDTVs to help spark more interest.
This isn’t a knock against Mitsubishi. I love the Galant and the last thing I want to do is see them go the way of the Dodo bird because they’re innovating the wrong way. There have been no plans about any internet connected HDTVs, no 3D televisions to show off. C’mon Mitsubishi – kill off LaserVue and show us all what you’ve got up your sleeve.
