This one came in via email and should be taken with a huge grain of salt because even I find it hard to believe. Apparently the good folks in Redmond are working with Samsung on a new OS for HDTVs. The email doesn’t give specifics but alludes to the increase in internet connected HDTVs and Microsoft’s desire to encroach even further into people’s livingrooms.
The big push are the widgets being used and the services behind them. If people are going to be watching them, it makes sense for the Zune marketplace to be available to all kinds of devices using Microsoft Silverlight. With years of work with Windows Media Center, it’s difficult to expect them to mess up a plane jane TV interace.
Similar to Sony’s XMB, I could definitely see hitting a marketplace button and being able to stream video. The video would show ads either pre or post roll or would be built into the viewing similar to Hulu.
There are 5 months to CES 2010 which leaves a lot of room for speculation. Samsung needs the boost in sales to keep away Vizio, and Sony and Microsoft is always looking for a new and exciting way to engaging users and selling ads. If you end up hearing about this one, just remember you heard it here first. Anyone else looking forward to this?
