Plasma HDTVs just won’t die. It turns out that in fact, more people went out and bought plasma HDTVs in Q2 of this year when compared to the previous quarter. The increase was the result of increasing sales of 42″ 720p HDTVs who have been dropping in price all year. Examples are the Samsung PN42B450 and Panasonic TCP42X1 who’ve experience several price drops from their original release. You can now find both of these television on sales for almost $600.
This is the magical price point I learned about from a poll done on users of this site.
It also doesn’t hurt that Panasonic has spend a lot of money promoting their plasma televisions and their 600Hz sub field motion.
LCD HDTVs didn’t fare so well, neither did larger plasma sets. With prices continuing to plummet and kids going off to school we should see sustained growth in this cheaper segment. It almost makes you wonder how good the Black Friday prices are going to be.
