It isn’t very often that I call things an outright ripoff but even I have to draw the line somewhere. I admit, univeral remotes aren’t always easy to setup and some of them can be a downright pain in the butt and a waste of time but $250 to setup a universal is highway robbery.
Consumerist.com caught wind of the story first. With the $250 purchase:
With this e-InstallCard a professional installer will program the primary commands of up to 8 devices into your pre-programmed or PC programmable universal remote control, program up to 4 advanced macro commands that enable 1 button, multi function operation, document user names and passwords that may be built into some of today’s newer remote controls, make sure all components are working properly with the remote control codes and show you how to use your new system.
Even though this service is being offered through Newegg InstallerNet can be purchased from lots of stores (online and off). The appeal is that they have a network of technicians who will do the work for you no matter where you are. It may be easy for most of us to read directions and get it done but there are people whose time is more valuable and would rather just pay someone else. For those people, they’re in luck. Geeksquad is offering the same kind of service for only $149. You know someone is grossly overpriced when they’re almost double what Best Buy is charging for it.
Buyer Beware.
