Emerson PL-P42W-10A 720p Plasma TV

Access more than 7.4 million parts at Parts Direct

The PL-P42W-10A is a 42 inch 720p plasma HDTV currently being offered at Walmart for $499.  This television was offered during Black Friday and the store decide to keep it stock through the holidays.

Here are the specs for the PL-P42W-10A:

- Screen measures 41.9 inches diagonally
- Widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio
- Native panel resolution: 1024 x 768 pixels
- 30,000:1 contrast ratio
- 1500 cd/m2 brightness
- Integrated Digital ATSC/Clear QAM/Analog NTSC tuner
- Film mode
- Digital noise reduction
- Two speakers with 20-watt stereo amplifier
- SRS TruSurround HD sound effect
- HDMI input (High Definition Multimedia Interface)
- Component video input (Y-Pb-Pr with R/L audio)
- Remote control

Before Walmart added these details to the television I came up with my own ideas about this television. First off, Emerson is a brand under the Funai family of products.  They also make products under the Philips and Sylvania brands.  The funniest thing I noticed when doing some searching is that Emerson doesn’t make any 42″ televisions.  The largest television they’ve made all year is 32 inches.  Also they don’t make any plasma televisions so I really had to think long and hard about what’s going on here.  This is what I came up with.

What gives with this TV?

It isn’t made by Emerson at all.  My bet is that Walmart reached out to Samsung for a cheap television and Walmart was able to license the Emerson name so Samsung wasn’t putting this television out under their own name.

[Proof - Samsung does the same thing for Best Buy's line of plasma televisions.  They have different model numbers but when you try to get parts for it, they are Samsung part numbers]

What kind of specs will it have?

From the circular making it’s way all over the web it is known that it will have 2 HDMI inputs, and 1 PC connection but what about the rest?  By looking at the Insignia NS-P42Q10A (notice the similarity in the model number???) chances are it will share specs:

Whats the bottom line? Is this a good deal or not?

    • Chance_Stevens

Bottom line – it's a great deal, but a risky proposition. The television is probably a decent/average one with a short warranty. People will have other opinions but if you snag one you'll be able to sell it or return it. I hope your'e already in line waiting to pick one up.

Well, I can add this to my list of bizarre things I've done in my life.. I got up at 4:45 to use the bathroom and figured what the hell, I'll run up to Wally World and see if their's any chance of snagging one. Never seen so many nutcases in one place in my life.. However, after 30 min. of stumbling around I found the right line and actually got a will call ticket for the 42 inch plasma and made it home with it in one piece. Thanks for the feedback, it helped light a fire under my tail..Larry

I actually work at Wal-mart.. Worked Midnight to 9AM.. Really wanted to buy one of the 32″ ones for 248.. But they sold the 6 pallets we had in an hour!!

So I as I was leaving a saw a 32″ Bravio for 378 and thought of grabbing that then i turned around and saw 4 of these 42″ Plasmas for 448!

Thought about it.. So worried about burn in.. But I got it.. And its beautiful so far.. Gonna do everything I can for the first 100-200 hours to make sure i get no burn in..

          Wish me luck!!!

I won't be setting mine up till mid Jan. as we're going to be on the road for the holidays. We watch a lot of action shows, so i'm hoping burn in won't be a problem. By the way, you have yours open..Whats the warrenty period? I hope it doesn't expire before I get a chance to hook it up..Larry
            P.S. Luck

This has to be a samsung re-badge. (the PN42B400). I was able to see them side by side and they are identical. right down to the stickers (minus the name samsung of course) The “emerson” doesn't even have an emerson badge on it. it's blank.
I picked one up, and when i tried to program my universal remote for it, not one emeron code worked… BUT the samsung codes did…

    • Chance_Stevens

A HA – Thank you for confirming my suspicions DN.

I got it by accident. Came back from holidays on Friday PM. Decided to stop in Wal-Mart at 11:30PM to pick up a few items. They had two of the TVs left still for $448. I bought it and am glad I did. Wal-Mart will warranty for 1 year from puchase for defects. I am very pleased with it for the two days I've had it.

Very cool. Hopefully it works well for you for years to come.

ok, I bought one of these TV's and so far have loved it but today I have had trouble. I can hear the cable TV shows but I cant see them. it wont even bring up the channel numbers or menu… any thoughts? Its my main TV so any thoughts are welcome! I hope I dont have to lug it back to wally to exchange or return :(

    • admin

Hi Brooke – from what I understand you’d have to do exactly that. Since Emerson didn’t actually make the TV, calling them will likely not do much but you can give it a try and see if they can help you over the phone.

    • Meowmiss

Connect the yellow plug into the video (Y)  and connect the other 2 red and white into the Left and Right audio plugs.  Red Into (R) and white into (L) ignore the other 2 pluges  (Pr) (Pb)  since u dont have them :P
