Sometimes a good buy isn’t a good buy. Many people were excited to find out I was right and that the Emerson PL-P42W-10A is in fact a rebadged Samsung plasma HDTV. The next thought many people had was “if this is a Samsung, I should be able to update the firmware just like a Samsung.”
This situation isn’t exactly an easy one because you’re talking about two very different things. First, a manufacturer like Samsung does make firmware available to help improve functionality (you can read about the fun I had updating my firmware here). Second is that many TV makers make TVs for other companies under other names to help make more money. It’s true that inside of the Emerson you own it’s 99.995% Samsung but that doesn’t mean you can go ahead and start flashing the chips inside your television or you might really mess it up.
Neither Samsung nor Emerson have come out to say that there are any firmware updates for this television at this time. If you have any issues your best bet is to contact the store you bought the television from, or Emerson directly. Either way, please do not do something hasty and end up having to buy another HDTV.
