After dominating the plasma TV space for the last several years Panasonic is setting their eyes on 3D televisions next. Samsung is currently the leader in LED televisions and their 3D counterpart but Panasonic is generating a lot of buzz and excitement for their line of Viera televisions.
The latest news from Panasonic is that sales are going so well that Panasonic is going to actually increase production by up to 30% to help meet with the extra demand.
In the US there are currently no 3D television channels but cable and satellite operators are picking select events such as the Masters to be aired in 3D so people with compatible receivers, televisions, and glasses are able to enjoy.
Right now there are two big hurdles to increased 3D adoption is the price, and the second are the glasses. Many people don’t want to use glasses to watch content due to the comfort and the increased price for these accessories. At more than $100 per pair you could end up paying almost $1,000 if your whole family wanted to watch the Superbowl together.
One thing Panasonic isn’t saying is what their expectations were. If they only wanted to sell 100 of these things and realize that they can actually get away with selling a few more that’s not much to get excited about. If they wanted to sell a million of these televisions and still need to up production, then it seems like 2010 just might be the year of 3D HDTV after all.
