According to a Pew Research Center report, television is no longer seen as a necessity the same way that it used to be viewed in previous records. Decade by decade this categorization has decreased from a high of 66% all the way down to 42%.
The issue is that as people are disregarding their televisions they are learning to realize that they can’t and don’t want to live without their flat screen HDTV. From 2005 through 2010, LCD and plasma televisions grew as a necessity from 5% to 10%.
With more and more people turning to HDTV to watch movies, play games, and enjoy sports it’s ubiquity should only help improve this number over time. The real shock is that this switch isn’t happening quicker. Million of people are running out to buy flat screen televisions every single year yet they aren’t seen as a “must have.” It looks like the ability to get digital content all over the place (ex. phones and computers) is diminishing the overall place of the television in our lives.
